Sustainability at La Buena Vida

At La Buena Vida, we are deeply committed to sustainability and strive to give back to the environment as much as we take from it. During the process of importing materials and building our home, we had to clear some of the existing growth on the property to pour footings, lay concrete, and construct the house. Unfortunately, this included removing some large trees—either due to space constraints, poor health, or because they housed large termite nests.
While it’s not possible to replace everything that was removed, we’ve made a continuous effort to replant and restore the natural beauty of the land. Our replanting has been an ongoing process, with new additions typically timed with the start of each rainy season.
So far, we’ve planted:
-
Palm trees (various varieties)
-
Coconut trees
-
Banana trees (which have already produced three large bunches!)
-
Two orange trees
-
A lime tree
-
A mango tree
-
An avocado tree
-
A 20-foot bamboo section
-
Various ground covers and flowering plants

Off-Grid Utilities
Our home operates entirely on solar power. Over time, we’ve expanded our solar panel and battery system to eliminate the need for a backup generator. This not only reduces our environmental impact but also ensures a quieter, more natural environment for the iguanas, lizards, birds, frogs, and other wildlife that share our space.
We also run a rainwater collection system. Rainwater is stored in a cistern and used for the kitchen, laundry, and showers. While we do purchase drinking water, we also collect condensation from our air conditioning units and additional rainwater in barrels to irrigate the gardens.

Meet Your Hosts!
We are the Smith family from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and we're thrilled to share our passion for travel and adventure with you. After years of visiting San Pedro and Secret Beach, we took the leap and built La Buena Vida at Secret Beach (The Good Life), our vacation property, to create unforgettable memories with our multi-generational family.
We fell in love with Central America's vibrant culture, delicious food, and exciting adventures. With direct flights from Canada, and English as the primary language, Belize became the perfect destination for our second home. Working closely with our wonderful property manager, Kelin Mencia, we obtained our rental license through the Belize Tourist Board, and La Buena Vida at Secret Beach was born in Fall 2024.
We've had the pleasure of hosting guests from Canada, the US, Belize, and the UK, and we can't wait to welcome you to Secret Beach, Ambergris Caye! Our home is your home away from home, where you can relax and explore the island's wonders. Come and experience the beauty of Belize with us!
Feel free to reach out to us anytime with questions about the property or the area. We love to share experiences and hidden gems! Once you arrive on the island, Kelin and her team will happily take care of your every need, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable stay.
We look forward to welcoming you to La Buena Vida at Secret Beach!
